Windows veteran Mike Nash posted at ‘The Windows Blog’ the reason behind the name, ‘Windows 7′.

The decision to use the name Windows 7 is about simplicity. Over the years, we have taken different approaches to naming Windows. We’ve used version numbers like Windows 3.1, or dates like Windows 98, or “aspirational” monikers like Windows XP or Windows Vista. And since we do not ship new versions of Windows every year, using a date did not make sense. Likewise, coming up with an all-new “aspirational” name does not do justice to what we are trying to achieve, which is to stay firmly rooted in our aspirations for Windows Vista, while evolving and refining the substantial investments in platform technology in Windows Vista into the next generation of Windows.

Simply put, this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore “Windows 7″ just makes sense.

If you are still confused with the various Windows versions here is the explanation.

The first Windows version was Windows 1.0, Second was Windows 2.0 and third was Windows 3.0. When Windows NT was released, it was code versioned as Windows 3.1. Windows 95, 98, 98 SE and ME (Millennium Edition) were code versioned as Windows 4.0 as all were using Non-NT kernel or 9x kernel.

Windows 2000 was code versioned as Windows 5.0 and Windows XP as Windows 5.1. Next version was Windows Vista which was code versioned as Windows 6.0. Since Windows 7 is the next Windows version, Microsoft decided to call it Windows 7 for easy and better understanding.

Windows 8 is the successor to Windows 7, which is Version 8.0 and is currently in development. Microsoft has posted a blog in Dutch on October 22, 2010 hinted that Windows 8 will be released after 2 years.

Recovering Your Password :

Download ISO image of “Office NT Password & Registry Editor” from Pogostick. Burn the image to a CD, and boot from the CD as you install OS.

After boot, the tool will display list of options to reset your password.

A number has been assigned to each installation on to the left. Enter the required installation and you will be asked for the registry location. Default option is selected, all you need to is confirm it by pressing enter.Now the system prompts what to do next, you need to a password reset so enter 1 and enter 1 once again to choose the option “Edit user data and Passwords”.

Follow the instruction very carefully and proceed to change your password. I think this is the best trick to recover your password, rather i should say resetting your password

Windows 7 Start Button Changer :

This is a very small application used to change the Windows 7 start button. Before starting off how to change the start button, download start Orb images (Deviant Art) . Run the application and click on “Select & Change Start Button”

and you are done, your start button changed

You can run the application and restore to its defaults by clicking on “Restore Original Explorer Backup”

Installing Universal Theme Patcher :

There are two versions of Universal Theme Patcher (x86, x64), Install the respective file corresponding to your computer’s configuration.

Run the file, click on the button “Patch” for all the 3 files, themeservice.dll, themeui.dll and uxtheme.dll, then the application prompts for reboot, reboot the system.

Installing Themes :

After rebooting the system make sure you download some  themes for Windows 7, I recommend to download themes from Deviantart.com, the Digital Art community.

Copy the downloaded files to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes

After copying the files to the theme folder, go to personalize and check for “Installed Themes”, click on the theme to install it.

Microsoft is testing OfficeTalk internally but is now accepting external requests from companies that want to join the program. Just as Twitter people create profiles, communicate in 140 characters or less, you read the messages of the people you follow and a search functionality to find people.

A company feed shows the posts of all the people who are posting. Like Twitter, you can see the person’s profile, the number of mentions, posts, followers and people who the user is following. It also has a url shortening service and threaded conversations they call comments.
